I found this construction sign while I was out hiking, but you could most certainly see the same thing on a regular road. Probably any type of road or trail for that matter.
This is a pretty important sign that you might want to become familiar with when hiking in Japan. The Kanji:
全 面 通 行 止
The Kanji Readings (this usage) and Meanings:
全 (ゼン) – all; whole; complete; entire
面 (メン) – surface; face; mask; features
通 (ツウ) – pass through; traffic; commute
行 (コウ) – going; journey; carry out
止 (ど) – stop; halt
The Words:
全面 (ゼンメン) – whole surface; entire
通行止(め) (ツウコウド(メ)) – road closed; closed to traffic; no through road; suspension of traffic
**通行止め can be written without the "め" to save space. It is pronounced the same with, or without, the "め" as "つうこうどめ".
